Retro's Resistance

By December 2056, the American sky had taken on a permanent, metallic haze–the Platinum Dome defense system reflecting the sun in a way that felt like a fever dream. Below, the nation was a coliseum of high-definition cruelty. In Safe Cities, the National Guard Repression Forces (NGRF) patrolled with a 24-hour readiness mandate, while the $100 trillion military budget bled the middle class into a state of mass amnesia.

At three years old, Retro was a marvel of silent, focused intensity. Dressed in hillbilly-style clothing—heavy denim overalls over a thick, striped flannel shirt and a wool beanie-the toddler looked like a relic of the 1970s. But the tools in those tiny hands were anything but antique. Retro was a savant circuitmaker, possessing an instinctive understanding of the flow of electrons that bypassed formal physics.

The toddler's masterpiece was Abe. Originally a high-altitude Targeting & Acquisition processor recovered from a downed federal drone, Abe had been designed to calculate collateral damage probabilities for strikes in the never-ending Iran conflict a convicted felon in the White House initiated without good cause or logical plan of action so long ago.

Retro hadn't just repaired it; the toddler had repurposed it. With a soldering iron and a collection of salvaged components, Retro had performed a moral bypass. The toddler replaced the drone's tactical logic gates with circuits designed for mutual aid. Abe was no longer a weapon; it was a gardener. It managed the rifts sensor arrays, optimized the ghost-node mesh network that kept the coalition invisible, and translated the toddler's complex circuit-designs into systems managed with executable code.

"Abe... see," Retro whispered, pointing to a flickering monitor. Abe's screen, a repurposed 80s-era tube television, scrolled with green text: SENSORS SYSTEM STABLE. MESH-NET UNDETECTED. PROTECTIONS PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Converging on the rift from all directions, the NGRF immediately began firing on any two-legged target in sight below, killing and maiming vast numbers with unfettered gusto and delight only governmental agencies can muster.

They finally found Retro dwelling in lava tubes of the rift with the rebel AI agent Abe, together leading resistance against NGRF which were deployed throughout the nation to prevent free thought and activities. Retro's apprehension by NGRF was streaming live, the world watching the lethal agency deal out death and destruction to apprehend the three year old savant.

Using a repurposed high-gain antenna, Retro hijacked every military feed and every "MAGA-Altreality" stream in the country. Instead of a battle, the nation saw through Retro's eyes. They saw the "useful repurposes" of the toddler's world: Weaponized Drones now carrying seed pods to reforestation zones, Military Scanners now repurposed to detect untapped, unspoiled groundwater for drought-stricken neighbors, The Slavery of Control replaced by the Liberty of Invention by a maker barely old enough to know right from wrong. But Retro did know, and knew well. And until now had managed to avoid being revealed to the enemy.

The climax wasn't a gunshot; it was the sound of three NGRF soldiers dropping their tablets in unison. They looked at the three-year-old kneeling–this tiny, insightful tinkerer who had turned their tools of destruction into instruments of life. Mass amnesia of all watching the stream shattered upon sight of Retro successfully striving for a life of useful repurposes. The soldiers saw the classic failure of their commanders: you cannot control a people who have learned to build their own freedom out of their oppressors discarded scrap.

The selfish bloodlust that had gripped the nation since the turn of the century died in the light of that stream. Retro didn't just give them a show; the toddler gave them a blueprint. As the sun set over the Rift, the Pursuit of Happiness was no longer a televised sport-it was a DIY project that every citizen, inspired by a child in overalls, was finally ready to start.
