Pecan trees are pretty common around here, but there's one on the new parcel of particularly nice quality. It's a native pecan, so it already produces tasty nuts, but about 100 years ago it was grafted with four other varieties (Mahan, Burkett, Stuart, and Commanche). So far I've only harvested three of the varieties I'm told it bears, (Native, Mahan, and Burkett).
The previous owner never drove any iron into them, so they're all in good physical condition.

Plenty were harvested last fall and enjoyed straight out of the shell all winter long. Last spring they showed no signs of bag worm, so I doubt I'll ever spray them, preferring to avoid using manmade insecticides or herbicides of any kind here, keeping it as organic as possible. Since the food forest will be an entirely non-profit operation, staying poison free will be easy.
