Blue Moon 2026

I always try to observe a blue moon. The most memorable one to date was on November 30, 2001. I walked out westward along the dry bed of Galisteo Creek into the night from my little casita situated at the northwest corner of Cerrillos, New Mexico. I had just completed the fourth month on the job for a state agency and had been highly successful at tasks to date. So a couple of hours after moonrise I struck out into the night, setting Waldo as the first milestone. Reaching Waldo without incident, I turned around, slowly walked back toward Cerrillos, gazing up at the full moon as frequently as I dared. There were rattlesnakes about, warming themselve on rocks and sandbars still radiating heat soaked up mere hours earlier. It was a quiet night, graced with only a couple of night jar booms and the call of another bird I didn't recognize. No other encounters with wildlife, that I'm aware of. A perfect blue moon.

Another memorable blue moon was enjoyed while camped atop Bernal Peak, also called Starvation Peak, at the end of June in 2007 after starting my own company. Paddy accompanied me there and seemed to enjoy the experience as much a I did. There was a ladybug swarm happening while we were up there, and I found glowworms in the peak's soil.

Last night's blue moon in the cross timbers here was a delightful one. Standing still for a long time staring at it wide eyed to allow plenty of its reflected light to fill my mind, ideas and notions of things still not created were loosened from conscious moorings to drift freely.

The next blue moon happens Dec 31, 2028. Plenty of time for ideas and notions to stack up.
