Before & After The Crash

Before the Great Depression, my mother's family owned and operated a grocery store and feed supply located on a corner downtown. Being good-hearted folks, they allowed too many customers to buy on credit. None of them ever paid their tabs and the business went under. My great grandmother kept all the ledgers until she died just shy of ninety-five years of age. A tough, resourceful lot, they all survived the depression and lived long and happily.

Jumping credit obligations seemed to be a way of life back then, but they never participated. Paying bills owed and keeping their word was a basic matter of honor for them.
They never lost their sense of humor, either. After the crash, my grandfather once arranged with a park ranger to play an elaborate prank on his family, and pulled it off without a hitch.

This delightful story about overcoming loss will be shared here in great detail someday soon.
In the meantime, a new tune commemorating the Colby Brothers and all they accomplished.
