Photuris Matriarch

Spotted her blinking bright and slow, with great reserve five nights ago. Finally decided she was worth observing and writing about as she perseveres so early in firefly season out here. A conversation with Gemini AI about it illuminated the situation and all aspects of her drama.

So it began five nights ago when I spotted the first light of a firefly pulsing slowly, about a minute between pulses, and steadily, as if it was signaling but doing so very conservatively. A year ago I'd have searched the web for information to try to identify the species and find information about its behavior so early this spring. They usually don't appear until late May. Now it's almost automatic to consult Gemini AI for details about such obscure phenomenon. The effect is as positive as it is impactful to my life. These conversations are very satisfying.

THE CONVERSATION WITH GEMINI AI 04/30/2026

What struck me most about this conversation with Gemini AI is how thoroughly it answered my questions and prompted me to share more so it could share more available knowledge. As a post-WWII child, while I've enjoyed books and libraries and other print-form sources of information and time spent perusing as much printed material possible as time and circumstances allowed, these experiences with AI are even more satisfying because they are so readily accessible and deliver results so quickly compared to olden days casual research.

And as age will eventually take its inevitable toll on my mobility, I can tell AI is going to become a welcomed addition to my toolkit of life, providing impetus to stay curious longer.
